It is said that, in ancient times, when knights and travelers crossed the shores of Lake Como, a mysterious creature would sometimes emerge from its waters.
It was neither fierce nor frightening, but watchful and curious: it observed the world changing, the mountains rising, and people arriving.
As time passed, the Lariosaurus became a legend — an unseen yet ever-living presence, symbolizing the bond between the lake, its mysterious past, and the desire to keep discovering.
Today, that legend has a face, a smile… and it has returned under the name of Larrie.
National newspapers began reporting sightings of a mysterious creature appearing in the waters of Lake Como.
Reports came from Pian di Spagna and Varenna.
And so, the modern legend of the Lariosaurus was born.
In Lierna, near the village of Grumo, the greatest number of stories began to emerge.
It was here that fossils of the Lariosaurus balsami were discovered, locally known as “Lierni.”
And so, the myth began to take shape.
In the summer of 1957, between Dongo and Musso, several witnesses reported seeing a huge creature appearing along the shores of Lake Como.
The Lariosaurus once again became the focus of headlines and public fascination.
A few months later, from a bathysphere, observers spotted a strange creature with a head resembling that of a crocodile.
A sighting that would go on to inspire stories and novels.
In 2003, in Lecco, reports surfaced of a supposed eel measuring 10 to 12 meters in length.
Once again, the lake amazed people and fueled the legend.
Between rational explanations and popular imagination, the Lariosaurus still lives on.
In music, in stories… and today, also in Larrie — its kindest face yet.
From the legend comes a collection of products dedicated to Larrie:
